HTTP 401

HTTP 401 is part of the 4xx directional codes that represents bad syntax or indicates that the request cannot be completed.  HTTP 401, also known as ‘unauthorized’, is displayed when authentication of user is required to fulfill the request but it has either not been provided or has been denied. Any URI that requires authentication uses this code. Another reason for displaying this code can be that web server is configured in such a way that it requires specific authentication code for communication purposes; however, none of the authentication protocols could be used by browser.
